Chapter Three

Randall was on the hunt.

He walked on the outside of the stairs, which he had read somewhere was supposed to cut down on the squeaks and creaks. It seemed to help, as did the fact that they were carpeted. He was sure the guys were much too involved with Quincy to be listening very carefully to small sounds in the house.

All he had heard on the ground floor and the lowest steps were her faint sighs of pleasure. The higher he went, the more he heard. Masculine voices and grunts, one calling out, “Fuck, that’s hot!” That was followed by Quincy’s laughter, which turned into another sigh, and then the sloppy sounds of kissing.

“Mmmmm.”

“Yeah, baby. Yeah, you kiss me like that, too!”

As he neared the top of the stairs, Randall paused. He had a view of one room up on the second floor, a bathroom, and it was as empty as the kitchen. The voices were coming from around the corner.

The thought of those two guys pawing at his wife on the floor like animals . . . he was already working on an erection, and that made him harden further. If he hadn’t figured out what she was plotting, he wouldn’t have caught on until tonight when he noticed the rug burns on her body.

“Ohhhh!”

It didn’t sound like they were having sex quite yet. Pretty heavy foreplay, but not sex. He would hear their bodies slapping together if it had progressed that far. Going up another step, barely daring to breathe, he peered around the corner.

“Ahhh!” Quincy cried.

There was nothing in this house. No pictures on the walls, no furniture, nothing to absorb sound. Along one side of the hallway were three closed doors, those rooms facing the front of the house, and on the other side were two doors, one open and one closed.

They had to be in that room, the one with the open door. Why bother to close the door for privacy in a house that nobody lived in anymore?

“Shit! I want some of that for me!” The voice was male, and full of desire. Yet . . . yet somehow it still had the quality of remove. Randall was scarcely five feet away from that wide open door. Something was off.

He edged a few inches along the wall, waited, and then edged along a few more inches. Until he was there, just beyond the door frame. Then he looked into an empty room.

In disbelief and bafflement, he stepped inside and looked through the rolled-back doors of the closet. Nobody was in there either.

“Yeah! Both of you do that!”

Quincy’s voice was issuing from a little monitor on the floor. The monitor was the same color as the carpet, which was why he hadn’t noticed it when he first stepped in. The only other feature of the room was a telescope, which was pointed to the window that overlooked the backyard.

“Take it off!”

“Goddamn! You’re a horny little bitch, aren’t you?”

The noisy rip of a zipper came through the monitor.
